Hammer Movie PostersThe Hammer House of Horror was a slogan that started to appear in the 70's, they even had a TV series with that name. This was the tail end of Hammer, they had defined themselves with Universal remakes like Curse of Frankenstein and Dracula, staring Cushing and Lee, at the end of the fifties. They went strong up until the early 70's after which they seemed to lose the plot. They are remembered for Horror but they also did a lot of movies of TV shows on their way out. I remember rather snooty arts shows and critics deriding Hammer films at the time, seen as not being up to the standard of the Universal monster movies (Hah! Abbot and Costello meet the Invisible Man? Bite me...). Now they are seen as classics, the last best effort of the British cinema. Like it or not, between Hammer, Carry On and the 70's sex comedy explosion, this was all that was keeping the British Cinema alive past the Kitchen Sink Drama era, until Gregory's Girl dawn at least. Hammer made their mistakes, they produced some stinkers and chased the nail toward the end trying to join any bandwagon going - Martial Arts and Dracula? Oh come on...but at least they had imagination and sometimes the shake up of themes worked, I still love Dr Jeckyl and Sister Hyde. It's good to know there is at least one Boobs of the Lesbian Vampire Twins movie out there. |

Belgian Quatermass II
Brian Donlevy * John Longden * Sid James * Bryan Forbes * William Franklyn * Vera Day I generally crop the white space at the top of Belgian posters off, for the photos only of course, I would never trim an actual poster. It's just blank space to write cinema times on, no point wasting pixels on it. Well, this one got used for just that so I kept it on since it helps date it. So, 16th Nov would be on a Thursday in 1961 according to my calculations. It's a likely a reprint then. |

Dracula (1958)
Quad
Style C 1960 re-release Peter Cushing * Christopher Lee * Michael Gough * Melissa Stribling * Carol Marsh * John Van Eyssen * Valerie Gaunt Such a rare poster that despite the poor condition mine is in, I am still very happy to have it. Looks like somebody tried some amateur archiving by strengthening the edge with tape. Still a great film, pacing is slow by modern standards, but the acting is intense and without any trace of parody. Lee was the best Dracula, he had the aristocratic bearing and the flashes of animal lust balance just right. It was a pity his voice was so inconsistently used for the subsequent series. |
|
The Hound of The Baskervilles (1959)

Anton Diffring * Hazel Court * Christopher Lee * Arnold Marlé * Delphi Lawrence * Francis De Wolff Once again, feeding my Hammer habit with the cheaper Half Sheet, the Quad makes much better use of Hazel Court. |

The Mummy (1959)
Quad (1960 2nd release) Art: Bill Wiggins
Peter Cushing * Christopher Lee * Yvonne Furneaux This is the reissue re-release version art, nowhere near as good as the original, but then I am not likely to ever own the original... |

Guy Rolfe * Jan Holden * Andrew Cruickshank * George Pastell * Marne Maitland * Paul Stassino * Allan Cuthbertson Pretty un PC, haven't seen it for a long time. Like "Terror of the Tong's" a bit of xenophobia you probably wouldn't get away with today. Quad is on the wish list... |
|
Curse of the Werewolf (1961)
/ Shadow of the Cat (1961)
Quad Art: Bill Wiggins
Clifford Evans * Oliver Reed * Yvonne Romain I still think this is one of the best versions of the story, even if the make-up and effects are dated now. Oliver Reed is convincing and sympathetic, he just does a great job. Have been waiting for this one for a long time and would be embarrassed to say how much it cost me, just think Arm + Leg and work up from there. D tells me that this is the original, as it went on initial release as a double bill. |

The Pirates of Blood River (1962)
Quad
Kerwin Mathews * Christopher Lee * Andrew Keir * Glenn Corbett * Marla Landi * Oliver Reed Quad art focusing more on Christopher Lee rather than generic pirate carrying off screaming wench as in the US version. The star in the main frilly shirt is supposed to be Kerwin Mathews though, isn't it? Where is he on any of the posters? |
|
Pirates of Blood River (1962)
1 Sheet
Kerwin Mathews * Christopher Lee * Andrew Keir * Glenn Corbett * Marla Landi Not a huge fan of 1 Sheets as you will see, the landscape look of quads just suits the art better. Along the way though, I've picked up a few I like. Different style, often art has nothing to do with movie. In this case, I haven't seen the movie so can't comment on artistic fidelity. |
|
Kiss of the Vampire (1963)
Quad
Art: Joe Smith
Clifford Evans * Edward de Souza * Noel Willman * Jennifer Daniel * Barry Warren * Brian Oulton * Noel Howlett Very nice artwork on this likely re-release version and one of the better movies, faith issues and flappy bats, what more could you want? Well, Dracula I suppose but no, still not making his comeback...yet. |
|
Kiss of the Vampire (1963)
/ Paranoiac (1963)
Quad Original Release Double
Art: Joe Smith Clifford Evans * Edward de Souza * Noel Willman * Jennifer Daniel * Barry Warren * Brian Oulton * Noel Howlett Initial release (D) double bill with color artwork instead of the green wash above. I m also a sucker for Ollie so glad to have Paranoiac bundled in. |
|

Quad
Tom Poston * Robert Morley * Janette Scott * Joyce Grenfell * Mervyn Johns * Fenella Fielding Hammer borrowing William Castle and inserting a popular American comedian of the day in an attempt to make it more USA friendly. Art is the same as the US One sheet just with the detail and colouring washed out. |

|
L'empreinte de Frankenstein (1964)
Belgian Evil of Frankenstein
Peter Cushing * Peter Woodthorpe * Duncan Lamont * Sandor Elès * Katy Wild * David Hutcheson * James Maxwell * Kiwi Kingston Hammer didn't really portray Frankenstein as evil, really, more just blindly obsessed. Not the UK artwork again, but the Belgian approximation of it due to the shallow pocket syndrome that currently afflicts me. |
|
She (1965)
US Half Sheet Art: Tom Chantrell
Ursula Andress * Peter Cushing * Bernard Cribbins * John Richardson * Rosenda Monteros * Christopher Lee * André Morell I've missed the quad version so many times due to my lack of pocket depth, I gave in on this US Half Sheet. It looks like the some of the Chantrell art was used here so that's some consolation. I have such a clear memory of Dad taking me to see this film, we arrived near the end of the previous performance as sometimes happened, so I got to see Ayesha's bad hair day before I got to see what led to it. I can still picture the dust in the projector beam for the star alignment in that scene. Great movie, great memory. |
|
The Nanny (1965)
Quad Art: Tom Chantrell
Bette Davis * Wendy Craig * Jill Bennett Not a huge fan of the art on this one, not sure why it always seems to be so expensive when offered. |
|
The Reptile (1966)
Quad
Art: Tom Chantrell Noel Willman * Jennifer Daniel * Ray Barrett * Jacqueline Pearce * Michael Ripper In spite of the gaudy fluorescence, I am told this is the original release poster. |
|
Raspoutine Le Moine Fou (1966)
Belgian Rasputin: The Mad Monk
Christopher Lee * Barbara Shelley * Richard Pasco * Suzan Farmer * Dinsdale Landen * Renée Asherson Art on this Belgian version isn't much cop but I just haven't seen the quad come up. |
|
One Million Years BC (1966)
Quad Art: Tom Chantrell
Raquel Welch * John Richardson * Percy Herbert * Robert Brown * Martine Beswick Nice poster, call me a philistine but I actually prefer the art on my cheaper BC/SHE Reissue double bill down the page. No account for taste I know, or complete lack of it. This one is becoming rare. |
|
One Million Years BC (1966)
/ She (1965)
Quad (Reissue Double Bill Date Unknown)
Art: Tom Chantrell Raquel Welch * Ursula Andress I love this poster, I even got mine rolled, no folds or pinholes. Regularly shows up for sale at very reasonable prices. If you wanted an iconic glamour movie poster for your home theatre, this would be the one I reckon. For why this is so often available see comments for Dracula Has Risen From The Grave |
|
A Challenge for Robin Hood (1967)
Quad
Art: Tom Chantrell Barrie Ingham * Peter Blythe * John Arnatt * Gay Hamilton * John Gugolka * James Hayter One of my favorite posters, I remember my Dad taking me to see this movie as a kid. |
|
Slave Girls (1967)
Quad Art: Tom Chantrell
Martine Beswick * Edina Ronay * Michael Latimer * Stephanie Randall * Carol White Argh! Just because you can silkscreen posters in dayglo doesn't mean that you should. Beneath the eye searing pink is some beautiful Chantrell artwork. What a waste... |
|
Prehistoric Women (1967) 1 Sheet Martine Beswick * Edina Ronay * Michael Latimer * Stephanie Randall * Carol White US title for Slave Girls above, maybe not very PC. One of the rattiest posters I have, practically falling apart. This one even contains graffiti on the art from a previous owner or possibly bored spotty teenager amusing himself at the cinema. |
|
Viking Queen (1967)
Quad Art: Tom Chantrell
Don Murray * Carita * Donald Houston * Andrew Keir * Adrienne Corri * Nial MacGinnis Another one of my favorite posters though I have never seen the movie. I know it will never live up to this art. |
|
Quatermass and the Pit (1967)
Quad Art: Tom Chantrell
James Donald * Andrew Keir * Barbara Shelley * Julian Glover Shows up on late night TV often enough and is still worth a watch. Chantrell does a great job with Barbara Shelley's cleavage. |
|
L'astronave Degli Esseri Perduti (1967)
Italian Quatermass and the Pit
James Donald * Andrew Keir * Barbara Shelley * Julian Glover Settled for this one because I thought I would never get my hands on the quad...see above.. |
|
Frankenstein Crea La Femme (1967)
French Frankenstein Created Woman
Peter Cushing * Susan Denberg * Thorley Walters The first linen backed poster I owned, I bought it that way. At some point in the future, when I win the lottery, I will have them all linen backed, but no restoration. They are what they are, film history, warts and all. Linen backing would just stop them flaking away. This poster makes the baron look more evil than typically he is, Cushing usually played him as obsessive rather than a monster. |
|
The Mummy's Shroud (1967)
Quad Art: Boris Grinsson
André Morell * John Phillips * David Buck * Elizabeth Sellars * Maggie Kimberly * Michael Ripper This was sold cheap and is almost certainly cut from the Mummy's Shroud - Frankenstein Created Woman double quad...for who knows what reasons. Size is 27x20 and is has clear scissor marks on top and left edges. Although it is beaten up, thankfully it doesn't have the day-glo green wash of the full quad, all the better to see Chantrell's art. So it's amazingly flawed but I still like it. The missing part of the double also has better non-washed out art...very odd. |
|
Vengeance of She (1968)
Quad Art: Tom Chantrell
John Richardson * Olinka Berova * Edward Judd * Colin Blakely * Jill Melford * George Sewell * André Morell * Noel Willman Would love to get my hand on the original She quad but no luck yet. |
|
Vengeance of She (1968) 1 Sheet Art: Allison John Richardson * Olinka Berova * Edward Judd * Colin Blakely * Jill Melford * George Sewell * André Morell * Noel Willman Whatever happened to...? |
|
Dracula has Risen From the Grave (1968)
Quad Art: Tom Chantrell
Christopher Lee * Rupert Davies * Veronica Carlson * Barbara Ewing * Barry Andrews * Ewan Hooper This was the first poster I bought, paid 15 quid for it round about 1976. Not that good a deal apparently, this one seems to come up for auction regularly and still sells for not much more than that. D- Dracula has Risen from the Grave quad, Hammer films in 1968, printed four or five hundred extra posters to give away to anyone who wrote to the studio. You received this poster with the She / One Million Years BC quad and 3 photographs of Lee Welch and Andress. Trouble is, nobody wrote, and several hundred rolled, mint quads were left and eventually ended up on the open market, and that's why there are so many about. |
|
The Devil Rides Out ((1968)
Quad Art: Tom Chantrell
Christopher Lee * Charles Gray * Niké Arrighi * Leon Greene * Patrick Mower * Sarah Lawson * Paul Eddington Great picture of the Angel of Death for what is one of the best Hammer films. |
|
The Devil Rides Out ((1968)
Quad rerelease Art: Tom Chantrell
Christopher Lee * Charles Gray * Niké Arrighi * Leon Greene * Patrick Mower * Sarah Lawson * Paul Eddington First and much better of the Dennis Wheatley adaptations Hammer did. The poster is the red reissue, there is nicer color art on the original. |
|
Moon Zero Two (1969)
Quad Art: Tom Chantrell
James Olson * Catherina Von Schell * Warren Mitchell * Adrienne Corri * Ori Levy * Dudley Foster * Bernard Bresslaw I have seen two versions of this quad, both by Chantrell but I don't know which is Original. This is the comic book art version which I have seen less often and I think is more interesting. Not a bad film, grand sci-fi effects are beyond Hammer's means but they put some effort into realism with the physics and details of the environment. SF is always worth seeing for the costume departments prediction of future feminine attire, in this case, seen as largely PVC based. Not exactly Barbarella but fun. |
|
Moon Zero Two (1969)
Quad Art: Tom Chantrell
James Olson * Catherina Von Schell * Warren Mitchell * Adrienne Corri * Ori Levy * Dudley Foster * Bernard Bresslaw ...and now I have the alternate shiny spaceship art version. |

|
Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969)
Quad Art: Tom Chantrell
Peter Cushing * Veronica Carlson * Freddie Jones * Simon Ward * Thorley Walters * Maxine Audley Art so much better without dayglo and silk screening. |
|
Le
Retour de Frankenstein (1969)
Belgian Art Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed Peter Cushing * Veronica Carlson * Freddie Jones * Simon Ward * Thorley Walters * Maxine Audley Belgian version of Chantrell's poster, as collecting Hammer becomes pricier, I am compromising with some continental drift. Apparently the Baron get eviler and the skirts get shorter for Europe. |
|
Scars of Dracula (1970)
1 Sheet Art: Mike Vaughan
Christopher Lee * Dennis Waterman * Jenny Hanley * Patrick Troughton * Michael Ripper * Michael Gwynn Hmm, Jenny Hanley before children's TV...other than that, not much to recommend it. |
|
When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (1970)
US 1 Sheet
Victoria Vetri * Robin Hawdon * Patrick Allen * Drewe Henley * Sean Caffrey * Imogen Hassall One of the 1 sheets I really like. Also has the priceless factor by being a movie I remember my dad taking me to. The opening scene with the banging rocks and the sacrifice of the blondes is still lodged in my memory. |
|
When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth
/ Great Train Robbery (1970)
Quad
Victoria Vetri * Robin Hawdon * Patrick Allen * Drewe Henley * Sean Caffrey * Imogen Hassall Haven't seen many quad versions of this to date, so went for this when it came up. I prefer non-double bills but who knows when I will ever see one. Odd art from Chantrell, I am guessing he didn't have a good picture of Victoria Vetri to work with, I wonder if he press ganged a daughter again to model for it since it looks nothing like her. Compare with US 1 Sheet above, the whole point of the movie was she was a blond and therefore sun sacrifice fodder. |
|
The Vampire Lovers (1970)
/ Angels From Hell (1968)
Initial Release Double Quad Art: Mike Vaughan
Ingrid Pitt * George Cole * Kate O'Mara * Peter Cushing * Ferdy Mayne * Douglas Wilmer * Madeline Smith Excellent movie, best of the three Carmilla stories. The full quad art would be nice and I have seen it around but at too steep a price. As you can see here not that different, not enough to go an arm and a leg for it. |
|
Lust for a Vampire (1971) /
The Losers (1970)
Initial Release Double Quad Art: Mike Vaughan
Ralph Bates * Barbara Jefford * Suzanna Leigh * Michael Johnson * Yutte Stensgaard * Helen Christie * Pippa Steel Second of the Carmilla trilogy after Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's character. Could have been a good movie, Stensgaard looks the part but is wooden, Lee wannabe Michael Raven is just annoying. I read a novel written of the film, that was actually quite good, so it seems the story is relatively sound. |
|
Twins of Evil (1971)
Quad Art: Mike Vaughan
Full Quad Initial Release Peter Cushing * Dennis Price * Mary Collinson * Madeleine Collinson * Isobel Black * Kathleen Byron Love the art on this, best poster of the three Carmilla movies (Carmilla is barely in this one though), second most watchable movie of the three. |
|
Twins of Evil (1971)
/ Hands of the Ripper (1971)
Initial Release Double Quad Art: Mike Vaughan
Eric Porter * Angharad Rees * Jane Merrow * Keith Bell * Derek Godfrey * Dora Bryan Another of the first ever posters I bought, in fact it was the Twins artwork that got me into this. Took me a while to find the non-double bill quad above though D tells me it's this version that is the first release. |
|
Draculas Hexenjagd (1971) German Twins of Evil
Art: K Dill Peter Cushing * Dennis Price * Mary Collinson * Madeleine Collinson * Isobel Black * Kathleen Byron Early days poster before I got strict with myself about just going for the UK quads. So I guess I have three Twins... |
|
Countess Dracula (1971)
Quad
Art: Vic Fair Ingrid Pitt * Nigel Green * Sandor Elès * Maurice Denham Hammer cynically using the D word when this is really nothing to do with Vampires, inspired by the Bathory legend. |
|
Blood from the Mummy's Tomb (1971)
US 1 Sheet
Andrew Keir * Valerie Leon * James Villiers * Hugh Burden Valerie Leon doing the Hammer cleavage honors, and who could offer more, but 70's audiences were starting to expect real nudity. Pretty soon they would get it. |
|
Blood from the Mummy's Tomb (1971)
Belgian Blood From The Mummy's Tomb
Andrew Keir * Valerie Leon * James Villiers * Hugh Burden Art on this Belgian version looks like that of Mike Vaughan's 1 Sheet. |
|
Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde (1971)
Quad
Tom Chantrell Ralph Bates * Martine Beswick * Gerald Sim * Susan Brodrick Hammer on a bit of a roll, this is one of their best efforts at adding a quirk to an over told story. Works well, Beswick and Bates even look a little alike. Pity the poster art is so boring, I have let this one go before because it seemed too high a price. This one was more reasonable. That's the trouble with collecting, you feel you have to have some items for completeness, though outside of being part of a series, on their own merits, they are not worth the money. |
|
Creatures the World Forgot (1971)
/ A Touch of the Other (1970)
Quad Art: Arnaldo Putzu Julie Ege * Brian O'Shaughnessy * Tony Bonner * Robert John The Touch of the Other tacked on makes this smell like a reissue. A non-double bill version appeared recently with screaming taglines on the tear off yellow section instead. I am guessing this is the original release version but since no new art was exposed by losing the Other this one has, I didn't upgrade. |
|
Vampire Circus (1972)
Quad Art: Vic Fair
Adrienne Corri * Thorley Walters * Anthony Corlan * John Moulder-Brown * Laurence Payne * Richard Owens * Lynne Frederick * Dave Prowse One of the off-beat Hammer's that works. A lot of details placed into the artwork, Dave Prowse clearly visible pre-Darth and Green Cross. |
|
Dracula AD 1972 (1972)
Quad Art: Tom Chantrell
Christopher Lee * Peter Cushing * Stephanie Beacham * Christopher Neame * Michael Coles * Marsha Hunt * Caroline Munro First of the modern day Dracula's, opening sequence showing death by cart wheel is pretty well done then it all goes down hill. |
|
Nothing But The Night (1972)
Quad
Christopher Lee * Peter Cushing * Diana Dors * Georgia Brown * Keith Barron Art isn't the best in my opinion and all that black shows up the fingerprints, still, not a poster you see around very often. |
|
Tower of Evil / Demons of the
Mind (1972)
Quad
Robert Hardy * Shane Briant * Gillian Hills * Yvonne Mitchell * Paul Jones * Patrick Magee |

Belgian Demons of the Mind
Robert Hardy * Shane Briant * Gillian Hills * Yvonne Mitchell * Paul Jones * Patrick Magee

|
Fear In The
Night (1972)
Quad
Judy Geeson * Joan Collins * Ralph Bates * Peter Cushing Hammer sadly going photographic in addition to ruining the artwork with a gaudy color wash. |
|
Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell (1974)
Quad Art: Bill Wiggins
Peter Cushing * Shane Briant * Madeline Smith * David Prowse * John Stratton Lots of gory props and obsession from the Baron and his assistant in this version. Last of the series. |
|
Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell (1974)
Fists of Vengeance Double BIll Quad Art: Bill Wiggins
Peter Cushing * Shane Briant * Madeline Smith * David Prowse * John Stratton More color in the double bill version also from the original release. |
|
The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1974)
Quad Art: Tom Chantrell
Christopher Lee * Peter Cushing * Michael Coles * William Franklyn * Freddie Jones * Joanna Lumley Also set in modern times, with Dracula rediscovering his voice and wishing to commit suicide by poisoning his food supply. Last time Lee would do Dracula for Hammer in a movie. |
|
Les Rites Sanatiques de Dracula
(1974)
Belgian Satanic Rites of Dracula
Christopher Lee * Peter Cushing * Michael Coles * William Franklyn * Freddie Jones * Joanna Lumley Belgian version, not as good a poster as above, not as bad as below. |
|
Count Dracula and his Vampire Bride (1974)
1-sheet US re-release for Satanic Rites of Dracula
Art: Neal Adams This is why I am not fond of US 1 Sheets...The poster for this movie has nothing to do with the film. Now I don't mind the art, it's a good sensationalist style for this genre, but using this art for this movie is simply a con. The artwork is just a collection of Bela Lugosi era clichés, nothing to do with this movie set in the modern world at all. That includes the deceiving tag lines "The King of the Vampires marries the Queen of the Zombies!" Um, not in this movie they don't...I can respect the drive-in demographic they are trying to lure in, but I don't know if the teens seeing it would have been disappointed or pleased with the story they actually got to see...or too busy making out to notice. |
|
Captain Kronos, Vampire Hunter (1974)
US One Sheet Horst Janson * John Cater * John Carson * Caroline Munro * Shane Briant * Ian Hendry * Wanda Ventham A good idea but needed a better leading man than the Wooden Horst. Could have been good, wasn't...everyone else in it did their bit, Brian Clemens wrote a good yarn. Went for the US 1 Sheet even though the art isn't that great because, well, the double quad isn't that hot either.
|
|
Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires (1974)
Quad Art: Arnaldo Putzu
Peter Cushing * David Chiang * Julie Ege * Robin Stewart * Shih Szu * John Forbes-Robertson * Robert Hanna I've never seen the film and avoiding buying the poster early when it was still cheap due to an irrational loathing for it has cost me dearly. It's just such a stupid, desperate idea. Ah well...discolored patch bottom right is a sticky residue from a sticker that had a correction to the cast list names, now lost and trapping decades of dust and hairs. |
|
To the Devil A Daughter (1976) Quad
Richard Widmark * Christopher Lee * Honor Blackman * Denholm Elliott * Michael Goodliffe * Nastassja Kinski * Eva Maria Meineke * Anthony Valentine The final nail in the coffin. No art in the poster or the movie. Low on my wish list but since it was cheap I gave in just to cross it off the list. I was too young to the see the best of Hammer in cinemas, I saw them later on TV. This one I did see in a theater, at release, and was very disappointed. Didn't do justice either to Dennis Wheatley or the Hammer legacy. It did get some free publicity from the Kinski nude scene scandal, allegedly she was 15 at the time. |
|
The Lady Vanishes (1979)
Quad Style A Art: Eric Pulford
Elliot Gould, Sybil Shepherd, Angela Lansbury, Arthur Lowe, Herbert Lom Too Late for Hammer but not a bad poster to end on, at least it's real painted art, mostly. Style A is Eric Pulford's vision of Sybil out for a run in her period jogging gear and the more common version. These used to show up regularly for decent prices but I hadn't seen either one for a long time...so to put myself out of my misery I picked this one up from a dealer. Of course, one showed up on Ebay 7 days later and went for a tenth (yep, really) of what I paid the dealer...Aargh!!! |
|
The Lady Vanishes (1979)
Quad Style B Art: Jock Hinchliffe
Elliot Gould, Sybil Shepherd, Angela Lansbury, Arthur Lowe, Herbert Lom The Style B version is by Jock Hinchliffe and I have only seen it show up a couple of times. Art is very different, with what seems like ink highlighting on many parts of the scene like the guns, hat and what seems like a scribbled (but legitimately printed on the poster) moustache. |
